We strive to ensure a controlled, safe environment with the well being of the horse our number one priority.  Whether it's starting your colt under saddle or nurturing the mentally tired athlete, we address every detail to give your horse the best possible training experience.

Our Mission

High Prairie’s practical approach allows each and every individual equine athlete to become the best that they can be. We are dedicated to designing the most comprehensive training and treatment protocol for each individual animal, and if necessary,  we will work with your trainer and veterinarian to design the best possible course of rehabilitation.

Company Profile

The facilities at High Prairie have a rich equine history – built in 1886, it was originally utilized as a mule rehabilitation facility when the Illinois railroad was being built.  Our barn was one of just a few along the proposed railway that had the means to safely and effectively build the mules back up to peak performance.  Since then, it has housed cattle, lain dormant for a few years, and in 1994 horses came back into residence.

High Prairie, LLC was founded in 1999.  It was the brainchild of four individuals dedicated to promoting the future of equine sports.   Dwight and Megan Espenschied and Terry and Cindy Grommet (Megan’s parents) teamed up to provide a more comprehensive training facility, and through the years it has evolved into one of the most elite full scale thoroughbred operations in the area.

In early 2008, the inaugural breeding season at High Prairie began, effectively completing the trifecta - training, rehabilitation, and now breeding.  What started with one stallion quickly grew into four, and we are learning more about the nuances of thoroughbred reproduction every day.  Rest assured that your mares will receive top notch care while residing at High Prairie.
